No help at all!

According to my blood tests, I'm very low in iron and it needs to be fixed pronto. Blah. I suppose I should feel more urgency towards it, but it's nice to know - that's probably why I've felt so tired lately. Anyway, I went to look up foods that were high in iron. This is a list that I got. I'll highlight the real goodies.

Foods Highest in Iron (per 200 Calories)

1.PARSLEY,DRIED : 70.9g Iron
2.WHALE,BELUGA,MEAT,AIR-DRIED,RAW (ALASKA NATIVE) : 58.6g Iron
3.SPEARMINT,DRIED : 61.4g Iron
4.MARJORAM,DRIED : 61g Iron
5.CEREALS RTE,GENERAL MILLS,WHL GRAIN TOTAL : 46g Iron
6.BABYFOOD,CRL,OATMEAL,W/HONEY,DRY : 34.4g Iron

Okay, so I'm supposed to eat 200 calories of Beluga, sprinkled with 200 calories of parsley. Got it.

Dealing with Death

Considering everything, I suppose I should feel even more traumatized.

It's weird. Most of the times, I feel pretty immune to it all. But when I'm alone with my thoughts, I keep seeing it over and over again or I think of the grief that my friend and her family is going through and then I can't help but blame myself. Outwardly, I'm doing okay, but the guilt is killing me inside.

I wish I could would have done more.

Is it so?

My mother and I watched Father of the Bride this past weekend. It's such a classic and will never get old. Of course, the premise of the movie is how Steve Martin (George Banks or Meester Bonks, tee hee) deals with his daughter's sudden engagement and wedding. In the opening scene, he says "You worry about her meeting the wrong kind of guy, the kind of guy who only wants one thing, and you know exactly what that one thing is, because it's the same thing you wanted when you were their age." It made me think of my father...whenever he tells me I'm dressing too feminine, or ranting about my brother (in relation to dating or him visiting his gf), he'll say "I know! I was a young man once too!"...that's probably something you'd never, ever want to hear from your father. Ick! Anyway, it got me thinking...are ALL men REALLY like that? Even my square old man? Even George Banks? I feel so disturbed!

Making cents of things

This year, my sacrifice for lent is to give up nonessential purchasing. My sister said that my lent this year is to "save money" but I corrected her because my aim is not to be frugal for the sake of penny pinching. While it's good to save, and I do have a savings plan, my intent is to free myself from my addiction of superficial and impulse buys. As much as I have (privately) tsk-tsk'd the boys at my church for buying their computers, laptops, PSPs, DS Lites, etc, etc, I came to the realization that I'm certainly no better. Everyday I spend at least 30 minutes browsing eBay for assorted jerseys. My jersey collection, while I'm proud of it, has become a vice. I hope that I'll find more productive ways of spending my time...at least 30 minutes more to myself, or more to give.

And God is funny in how He works. So now that I'm not spending much money - other than bus passes and gifts for others - you'd think I'd have all this money saved up. Wrong! I've just recently incurred a ton of "incidental costs" as a part of my RCMP application. I have to recertify my first aid and CPR skills ($147), get a typing certificate ($25), order transcripts (6$) and other various tasks. I realize that the 200 or so dollars isn't that much, but it's still $200 that I wasn't anticipating. Oh yes, I also got a flat tire that needs replacing. Anyway, my point is that the timing is good. It's nice to see how the money I would be spending on jerseys is coming in handy. Perhaps this is a practice I'd like to follow through with for parts of the year.

Jim and my mother

I really have to get in tip-top shape before I'm sent out for training, so the gym had been calling me for a while. I'm lucky because my family is in very good health - no history of heart disease (that I know of) or cancer or anything serious - but I still worry about my mother alot. She has high blood pressure and is "border-line diabetes," whatever that means. Anyway, if you've ever met my mum, you'd understand. She is very jovial both in personality and stature. She also doesn't possess much muscular mass, either. One pound dumbbells are even a challenge! She keeps making morbid, off-hand remarks that she doesn't have much left in her and quite frankly, it gets me really sad. Anyone that knows me, knows how much I adore my mummy  So today, I told my mum I was going to the gym and that I would really like for her to join me. Without a fight, she said "yes!" so off we went. Again, I'm lucky, because I go to the gym at the community centre. I know 90 minutes is too much, too soon for my mum, so she went off to the library for the first hour. Because my mum is considered a senior (55 and over), she bought herself a 12-visit punch card for only 29$. What a steal! Anyway, my mum joined me in the gym and walked off 300 calories on the treadmill (at incline setting 5!!!!) in 30 minutes. I'm so proud of my mother. You shoulda seen her. She was the only one in the gym that wasn't decked out in dri-fits and running shoes. She wore jeans and a longsleeve cotton tee which was dripping by the end of her workout. Way to go Mum! You rock! I'm glad she's (finally) being proactive about her health. She lamented that she wishes my dad would join her. I do too. But, for now, I'm really enjoying our weekly dates at the gym.
